The Bryant Museum will host honorary Captains Marlin “Scooter” Dyess and Benny Nelson on Saturday, September 9, 2017 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. Both Captains will be available for autographs. Scooter, a two-sport star for the Crimson Tide in football and track, was one of the first stars for Alabama during the Paul Bryant Era. After playing one year for Coach Ears Whitworth, Scooter helped lead the Crimson Tide back to its winning ways in 1958 and 1959. His 38-yard touchdown reception was the only TD in Alabama’s 10-0 win over Auburn in 1959. Voted the team captain that year, Scooter became a successful businessman after graduating. In 2012, he was honored as the recipient of the Paul Bryant Alumni-Athlete Award, given annually to a former athlete for his contributions to society and high personal character. Nelson, a halfback from Huntsville, Alabama, helped lead the Tide to a record of 30-3 and a national championship in 1961. During his senior year in 1963, he led the Tide with 10 touchdowns, including an 80-yard run against Auburn. After the season, he was named to the All-SEC team as well as being selected second team All-American. Nelson was also chosen by his teammates as one of the permanent team captains of the 1963 team. After finishing his Alabama career, Nelson went on to play for the old Houston Oiler franchise of the AFL. The Bryant Museum will have extended hours of 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on September 9, 2017.
