Christ Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa, Ala., will present an All Saints’ Day Choral Evensong on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 6:00 p.m. The evensong will remember and honor those who have died, especially those who died during the past year. Their names will be read during the service. The choirs begin the service by singing “O Gracious Light” (Phos hilaron), a 3rd century hymn set to music by Scott Robertson, Christ Church organist, followed by a version of Psalm 150 by Noel Rawsthorne (b. 1929). Featured in the musical program at the evensong service will be the traditional evening hymns “Magnificat” (My soul doth magnify the Lord) and “Nunc dimittis” (Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace) by David Ashley White (b. 1949). Anthems offered by the adult choir will be four settings of scripture from the Book of Wisdom: “The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them for they are at peace.” One setting is by Mark Schweizer (b. 1956), one by T. Tertius Noble (1867-1953), one by R. Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), and one by Henry Walford Davies (1869-1941). The St. Cecilia Singers will join the adult choir on Mark Schweizer’s “Souls of the Righteous.” Other music will include congregational hymns “For all the saints, who from their labors rest,” and “Ye Watchers and ye holy ones.”
